Affirmations are they powerful or just a cute phrase?

 

Affirmations. Just those cute little phrases that get printed into journals, stationery and pens. Oh, and don’t forget the ones that fill your Pinterest boards or Instagram feed.

They are so common, and most of the time – there is no context. They are hollow words and statements that you read and dismiss.

Affirmations are more than that, though – they are declarations of truth. They are statements that you are ‘affirming’. Your brain doesn’t know when you are joking or being sarcastic. It doesn’t compute that you are exaggerating or lying. It will take what you say and believe it, compiling evidence to back up what you repeat on a regular basis.

The majority of the time, our affirmations are subconscious and often from our childhood.
Things we heard on a regular basis, other people’s truths or opinions.

We could repeat affirmations about:

Money –

  • “Doesn’t grow on trees”
  • “Easy come, easy go”

Or Health –

  • “It all goes downhill as you get older”
  • “It runs in the family”

What about relationships

  • “there are no good men”
  • “marriages never last”

But simply because these are the thoughts and opinions that you were led to believe as a child, it does not mean that you have to continue to believe that now.

You can decide what you choose to affirm.

Positive affirmations are generally short, simple phrases that are repeated to promote self-confidence, optimism, and a positive mindset. They are a powerful tool for changing internal dialogue and shifting negative thought patterns to positive ones. When practised regularly, positive affirmations can have a significant impact on your emotional and mental well-being.

 

You can use conscious use of affirmations to change your internal dialogue. Your internal dialogue, or self-talk, is the voice inside your head that narrates your thoughts and experiences. It can be positive or negative, and it can have a significant impact on how we feel about ourselves and the world around us. 


Negative self-talk can lead to feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and depression.
Positive self-talk, on the other hand, can boost confidence, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being.

 

Positive affirmations are a simple and effective way to change the internal dialogue from negative to positive. By repeating positive statements to yourself, you can start to reprogram your subconscious mind and replace negative thought patterns with positive ones. For example, if someone struggles with self-doubt, they might repeat affirmations such as:

 

“I am capable,” – “I trust myself,” or “I believe in myself.”

Over time, these affirmations can become ingrained in the subconscious mind, leading to a more positive and confident internal dialogue.

 

When we change our internal dialogue, our perception of the world also changes. Instead of focusing on our limitations and failings, we can train our minds to see the possibilities and our successes.

 

When this change is made, choices and decisions are made from a deeply empowered and aligned place. Relationships shift and change, as well as career opportunities and social encounters. When you use affirmations in a positive and educated way to direct what you want your brain to believe – you can create a life that others would deem impossible.

Once we are able to shift and change our inner dialogue and how we see ourselves, our beliefs about the rest of the world will naturally shift and change. The statements that we make about the world we experience will be vastly different to the ones we were given growing up.
